

Biography
Andrew J. Lyter serves as the Executive Director and Curator for the Lewes Historical Society
and as an adjunct professor in Maritime and American History at the University of Delaware. He
holds an MA in Naval History from the University of Portsmouth, Great Britain where he is
currently pursuing a PhD. As a maritime historian, Lyter specializes in the social history of the
Revolutionary Atlantic, focusing on American sailors serving in the Royal Navy. He is an avid
sailor, regularly crewing aboard tall ships in both the United States and United Kingdom.
Lyter is a regular contributor to Lewes History: The Journal of the Lewes Historical Society, The Journal of the American Revolution, and most recently published a chapter, “Discovered Going to the 74’ in a Small Boat: Black Pilots and Maritime Opportunity aboard HMS Poictiers, 1812-1813,” in Sailors, Ships and Sea Fights. His first book, Going Among English Sailors: American Tars Aboard HMS Belvidera, 1809-1814, was published in November 2024.
